Where’s the rum? (or, Welcome to our blog.)

Welcome to The Ballast. In case you’re not quite sure what a ballast is, here’s a handy diagram courtesy of Wikimedia Commons to help you out:

Yeah, I can't read it either. It's somewhere near the bottom.

I should probably introduce myself. My name is Keeley Sheehan and I’m the new editor-in-chief at The Crow’s Nest, the student-run newspaper for the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. The paper will print weekly starting on August 22, and be distributed around campus to bring USFSP students all the latest news to keep them updated on the goings on around campus.

The new staff is already at work to put out a great paper when that first freshman steps foot into class in the fall. We’re making a lot of changes. Changes you can expect to see include, but are not limited to: new design, new website, more active social media use, weekly printing (the paper was biweekly last year), new logo, new slogan (well, maybe—that’s up to you), and anything else we dream up between now and August.

And that brings me to the point of this blog. We’re making a lot of big changes in the hope of better serving the USFSP community. We want to bring you news you need to know, information that will help you navigate USFSP life, engaging arts, life and athletics coverage, great photos, and thought-provoking commentary.

This blog will take you along for the ride. Throughout the year, we’ll use it to keep you updated on what’s going on behind-the-scenes at The Crow’s Nest—from stumbles to triumphs, from editorial meetings that just. won’t. end. to late-night editing parties. My goal with this blog is to bring the reader along for the ride.

It won’t just be me; other Crow’s Nest staffers will stop by with their two cents throughout the year. Welcome aboard.
